PacMMS employs a 24 hour Vessel Monitoring and Alerting Center staffed by trained personnel and equipped with state of the art AIS vessel tracking software evaluating AIS data received from a network of over 160 terrestrial AIS receiving sites and several AIS satellite receiving systems covering the Pacific. The PacMMS Operations Center serves to assist vessels’ compliance with port queuing initiatives developed to increase the distance vessels remain offshore to provide more open water to reduce the risk of collisions as well as mitigate nearshore emissions. PacMMS also aid vessels adherence to offshore routing measures and notifies regional PacMMS affiliate organizations and other appropriate parties when an incident of concern presenting an elevated risk of a marine casualty is detected.

When a vessel is faced with an elevated risk situation such as loss of power, information on resources available, their capabilities, current locations of response assets and points of contact will be provided 24 hours a day from PacMMS’s network of regional maritime experts. An updated Emergency Response Information System developed and maintained by PacMMS is made available to owners/operators, QI’s (Qualified Individual) the Coast Guard and state agencies when an incident develops to aid implementation of an effective and timely response to prevent or minimize adverse impacts.
